What to Put Around the Bottom of Your Shed

What to Put Around the Bottom of Your Shed

Sep 29, 2021

Q: Shed Skirting – What is the Best Way to do it?

Closing Off (Shed Skirting) the Bottom of Your Shed the Easy Way

We’re well into the new millennium and there are several great ways to close off the bottom of your shed. Whether you own a shed, portable building, or outbuilding this skirting hack is for you. Not only will we discuss closing off the bottom of the shed, but we will touch base on how to hide the bottom of the shed.

How to Seal the Bottom of a Shed from Rats?

Lets’ face it, sheds are necessary for protecting your stuff. So, knowing how to seal the bottom of your shed from rodents is a good thing. How you choose to close off the bottom of your shed can impact how safe the things you keep in your shed are from animals, weather, and rot.

The materials you use to close off the bottom of your shed need to protect your valuables from weather, pests, and ground moisture. They need to be durable, ventilated and resist rodents.

Quite frankly, the best materials to chose from are made of concrete and bricks. I will explore the differences between each of these products below, explaining the best and easiest ways for installing them so they will effectively close (hide) off the bottom of your shed.

Here’s What to Put Around the Bottom of Your Shed. Choose From These Materials:

Shed Skirting - What to Put Around the Bottom of Your Shed

Outbuildings and portable buildings can be made safe by installing DURASKIRT™ shed skirting. DURASKIRT™ kits provide great rodent protection when installed properly.

  • Brick
  • Cinder Block
  • DURASKIRT™ Shed Skirting / Underpinning Prices
  • Landscape Block

Brick is an age-old material that does an exceptional job protecting homes and, in this case, sheds from unwanted guests.  Follow these simple steps installing bricks:

  1. Tools you will need are masonry tools, brick saw, wheelbarrow, shovel, string, hammer, joint tool, trowel, and grout bag.
  2. Excavate down below frost depth and at least 8” wide.
  3. Set level grade marks by driving stakes into the soil and either cutting or marking them for the desired elevation and minimum 6” thickness.
  4. Mix concrete to fill to the top of stakes and carefully grading to flatness although leaving a slightly rough surface.
  5. Next, mix mortar for bricks then begin stacking them to the desired height. Some people may like to stack them high enough to protect the lower portions of the framing from the weather. If you do this use a good brick flashing on top to shed rain outside the bricks.

Cinder Block, less expensive compared to brick, is also a great material to use. Depending on the block thickness, 4”, 6”, or 8” you will need to provide an appropriate footing width. The installation is much the same as a brick so following the same steps and tool needs will suffice.

DURASKIRT™ is by far the easiest way to close off the bottom of sheds (no footing required). Cutting these panels requires a diamond blade in a circular saw. The only tools needed for DURASKIRT™ shed skirting are a saw, shovel, and a caulking gun. For figuring materials, measure the outside lineal footage and desired panel height.

To save additional money, panels can often be cut down in half to save money. DURASKIRT™ is great for storage sheds. Ordering is also easy and delivery to your home is by LTL freight. Call 360-419-9909 and order your shed skirting today!

Landscape Blocks are another way you can close the bottom of sheds. Can be used and does not require a footing either. The main drawback is their wider widths. Otherwise, they are a very good way of keeping varmints from taking up residence under your shed. You will also need to add a brick metal over the top of them.

Now that you know the best ways for closing off (hide) the bottom of your shed it’s time to stop procrastinating and do the job! It will be rewarding, and you’ll be glad you did it.

How is DURASKIRT™ made?

DURASKIRT™ is a concrete panel for covering the external parts of any structure. The chemistry of today’s concrete makes for a long-lasting desirable siding worth the initial expenditure. Products for skirting your raised home can be made from vinyl, wood, metal skirting, precast concrete siding, cement siding, or lattice. Materials Needed for Making The Cement Board Well

Cement Board Well Kit

  • 1 tube exterior grey caulking
  • 1 bag DURASKIRT™ cement powder (color matched)
  • DURASKIRT™ access well frame

Well sides being cut after measuring. Notice the 2″ slope.

Cement Board Well Installation

Begin the cement board well by placing a panel on each side of the desired underfloor opening using the Access Well Frame between them to determine the opening width (approx. 34 ½”). Next, lay down two DURASKIRT™ panels with their backs together, white mark to white mark. Now layout and mark with the pencil the desired height and width (may vary 24 1/8”) leaving ¾” short for well front and giving the top a 2” slope. Finally, cut the two sides of the well making sure to leave the fabric at the bottom edge.

Following the above procedure, carry the cement board pieces to the opening and place them on each side of the well-frame. Using the frame, you can set and level both pieces with white marks inward, fabric outward, and using the frame to hold them in place. Make sure to leave a gap between

the top of the well-frame and the bottom of the siding. Now measure the outside width (35 ½”) for the front well panel so it spans over the side panels for support.

Cement Board Sides & Lid

The next step for building the cement board well is to cut the lid placing the white markdown. The lid will be 37” x 25 ½” (Cut the fabric edge off). Also, it’s important to choose a panel that is free from chips. Moreover, install it under the front edge of the Access Well Frame where you left a gap. When finished the lid should fit firmly underneath the belly band or precast concrete siding.

Concrete Board Siding – What Is The Best?

When you are looking to replace skirting for your mobile home you are no doubt looking for something that is sturdy. Also, it must be, reliable, versatile, and—of course—reasonably priced. There are many different types of boarding and skirting out there on the market, ranging from brick products to wood slats and concrete siding, and much more. The most important factors that indicate the quality of siding are the quality of the materials, the longevity of the product, and how the product can be used.

Concrete Boards

DURASKIRT™ best concrete board siding is Back-fill ready.

DURASKIRT™ is a versatile, highest quality cement or best concrete board siding that can be used on everything from mobile homes to log cabins to post and beam houses and much more. In terms of high quality, reliable concrete board siding, DURASKIRT™ meets every expectation you as a homeowner could have—and then exceeds them.

Do It Yourself Concrete Board Siding

One of the most unique aspects of DURASKIRT™ is how easy it can be to install. Did you know, much of the high prices involved in concrete siding installation are not actually from the materials. But from what people charge to actually install the product. Paying for time and labor can easily triple or even quadruple the total cost of getting new concrete skirting, especially if you are dealing with a company that charges an exorbitant amount for labor. DURASKIRT™, however, provides you with two very reasonable options: do-it-yourself installation or having it installed for you.

The pricing for installing DURASKIRT™ siding yourself is very reasonable: per linear foot for the traditional smooth concrete siding; or a deal per lineal foot for cement board siding. This calculates to be very cost-effective per square foot, respectively. DURASKIRT™ is much easier to install than other types of concrete siding. It’s making the “do it yourself” option very appealing to many people.

Have It Installed

If you don’t want to install DURASKIRT™ siding yourself, however, you are in luck. The company also offers an affordable installation price, which covers the cost of the siding. The installation price for the traditional concrete board siding is reasonable per linear foot.

DURASKIRT™ brings everything you could want in concrete siding to the table. Plus that little extra makes it truly unique in the business. If you are looking for the very best in concrete board siding, look no further than DURASKIRT™.

Mobile Homes Need Skirting.  Here Are Some Skirting Ideas

Skirting enhances the visual appeal of a mobile home. Furthermore, this article will explain the various skirting ideas to help you make a more informed decision. So, it’s helpful to understand first the need for skirting.

Skirting is a barrier against the elements. Moreover, it also prevents various creatures like rodents, insects, and snakes from nesting underneath your home. Likewise, these creatures can cause damage to your insulation, water lines, and electric wires.

So, the question is not whether to use skirting ideas, but which one to choose. Additionally, we’ve listed below a few mobile homes skirting ideas including their pros and cons. Hopefully, they will help you make the right choice:

– Aluminum skirting

This used to be the most popular mobile home skirting option because aluminum is strong, durable, and does not get easily damaged. Although, it is prone to corrosion as is all aluminum. However, unlike other aluminum, aluminum skirting panels are chemically treated to be resistant to the outdoor elements.

Additionally, with aluminum skirting you will not have to worry about rusting, rotting, or termite infestation. The main disadvantage of aluminum skirting is that it is prone to fading, especially the darker colors and treatment failure.

– Vinyl skirting ideas

The advantages are it is inexpensive, weatherproof, and easy to install. But it is not as durable as aluminum and other materials available. Besides, many mobile homeowners who installed vinyl skirting report that they have problems with rodents.

Also, these creatures are chewing their electric wires and making holes in the insulation. Vinyl may be tempting due to its low cost but not for the long term. Lastly, it tends to be one of the most expensive options available.

Read this article: How much does vinyl skirting cost over time?

– Wood, particleboard, and plywood skirting.

Rodent Intrusion Through Mobile Home Skirting

Treated plywood with a rodent hole.

Another option to enhance the beauty of your mobile home and cut the costs for heating is wood, particleboard, and plywood skirting. Still, the panels are chemically treated to be made outdoor proof and should not be vulnerable to water. Unfortunately, they do grow mold when exposed to moisture and do eventually rot.

Moreover, many people who live in regions with high moisture levels and frequent precipitation report having problems with moisture and mold. Also, wood, particleboard, and plywood will not stop rodents from chewing their way through.

So, vinyl skirting, plywood, or anything made of wood is a very short-term solution.

 – Simulated fake stone/fake brick skirting

For skirting ideas creating an illusion of real stone or brick you can use fake stone/brick.  Be mindful it consists of pressure-treated wood framing to attach the fake stone or brick-like panels.

Likewise, Simulated stone/brick skirting looks beautiful, but the wood can become a breeding ground for mold that can spread to the rest of your home.

So, vinyl skirting, plywood, or anything made of wood is a very short-term solution.

– Concrete skirting –

skirting ideas for mobile homes

DURASKIRT™ concrete panels for mobile homes.

“Best for deterring rodents.” Being the most durable and convenient of all mobile home skirting options. Also, it will keep the rodents and similar creatures away, will not rust, rot, or get affected by mold or termites.

Likewise, concrete skirting is a little bit more expensive but considering that it lasts a lifetime, it can save you a great deal of money in the long term. Besides, you can paint or stain it in any color you like or leave it natural.

Moreover, people like the natural look because it creates the look of a site-built home.  The other benefits are added security, comfort, and lower energy bills.

Lastly, If you live in an area with a cold climate, concrete skirting for manufactured homes will help you keep your home much warmer as it will protect the underneath of the floor from the cold air and winds.

Note: Skirting and underpinning are the same.

Installing DIY Park Model Skirting

Obviously, the best way for beginning is by choosing the right park model skirting kit. Moreover, choosing DIY park model skirting can be challenging too.  Likewise, choosing from several types of skirting starting with cheap plastic to concrete skirting. Decisively, our preference is using concrete skirting.

Of course, mostly for making sense for every climate and long-term enjoyment. Furthermore, beginning with a 2” drip edge metal, usually white. Additionally, screwing it under the home’s perimeter and flushing it with the siding.

Excavating Depth

DIY Park Model Skirting

DIY Park Model Skirting. Using DURASKIRT™ concrete skirting.

Furthermore, time for taking measurements to the ground. To explain, making sure you’re excavating at least 2” to 4” into the soil. Likewise, using DIY park model skirting by forming a barrier against rodents and large animals. Also, you can add a wire screen buried under the panels for extra security if you like.

Once establishing the grade it’s time for deciding a few things. Specifically, where we’re wanting the water access, sewer, and crawlspace(s). Similarly, beginning with cutting and fitting the panels then setting out the hardware for the skirting. Finally, after finishing the concrete panels they look and feel like a residential home.

What if It’s On A Slope?

In particular, sloping lots are all too common and require a special set of instructions. For this reason, we have written: “How to Skirt A Home Over 38 On A Sloped Lot” explaining this application in detail.

Setting The Concrete Panels

Certainly, after placing the concrete panels it’s time for adding the door hardware. Likewise, adding the grey concrete filler to the joints. Equally important, we use a specially formulated cement powder on the wet caulking. As a result, for making the panels appear seamless. Next, it’s time for installing a unique ventilating system.

DIY Park Model Skirting & The Unique Hidden-Vent System

Indeed, installing a DURASKIRT™ concrete paneling system has benefits. Most importantly is the exclusive “Hidden-Vent” system. Surely the panels work cohesively for forming the “Hidden-Vent” easily over their tops. Again, this venting is an unsurpassed way for venting the crawl area. Specifically, forming an even airflow preventing dead air spaces.

Definitely, from our perspective, DURASKIRT™ is the best quality DIY park model skirting.

We’re Set

After finishing all the panels, venting, doors, and caulking it’s time for back-filling. Namely, using soils that were disturbed by excavating. Finally, by leveling the dirt you can step back and take pride in all of your accomplishments. Thus, completing a concrete panel skirting job that’s well done. Truly, a customer was quoted as saying “DURASKIRT™ and be done.”
