What Is Cement Board and What Is It Used For?

What Is Cement Board and What Is It Used For?

Jan 11, 2023

Cement board may be a familiar product to carpenters and even some ambitious do-it-yourself homeowners, but what is it, exactly?

Is there exterior cement board verses interior cement board?

Cement board is a tough, large panel composed of cement and other fibers that comes in different sizes and thicknesses, most often ¼” or ½” thick and 3 feet by 5 feet in size. Like drywall, it is sold in sheets and can be purchased at hardware or home improvement stores.

Cement Board vs Drywall

Cement Board - Not A Cheap Mobile Home Skirting

Cement Board – Not A Cheap Mobile Home Skirting

Cement board has a different use than drywall, however. While drywall panels create smooth walls and ceilings and are appropriate for most rooms, cement board is best suited for bathrooms and other areas that are prone to humidity and frequent moisture.

Cement board is used as the wall-backing behind shower tile and bathroom tile. It is much tougher than drywall and can resist mold, mildew, and other moisture-related issues prone to bathrooms. It’s a better option for rooms where moisture, sitting water, and humidity are common, because cement board is heavy and tough and creates a great base for tiles.

Exterior Cement Board?

Some homeowners have used this product as exterior cement board for the house skirting around their mobile or manufactured home, treating it as a cheap mobile home skirting alternative.

Unfortunately, this does not work out well for them.

While cement board is good for bathrooms, it does not hold up as well outside where it is highly susceptible to weathering and a lot more moisture. When used on a home’s exterior as house skirting, cement board often doesn’t last long. The nylon component on the cement board begins to deteriorate and then the cement itself begins to crumble. This causes holes in the house skirting.

Cement Board Should Be Used Inside

It is best to use cement board with indoor locations like bathrooms where it is used as a backing for tile and helps prevent mold and other common moisture problems. However, if you are looking for skirting for your home, there are other options for house skirting for homeowners of mobile or manufactured homes.

DURASKIRT™ offers a house skirting product similar to cement board but it is thicker, tougher, and designed to be used outdoors. It won’t crumble or fall apart and will holds up to weathering and outdoor elements. If you are searching for a cheap mobile home skirting option that will last, get in touch with us at (360) 419-9909. We can help answer any questions you might have and share more information about our house skirting product: a durable, efficient option that does a great job.

There is more than the cement board and well frame. You will need to know the materials and tools before beginning. As you will see assembling the DURASKIRT™ cement board well is easy. Begin by gathering your supplies and tools as shown below.

Materials Needed for Making The Cement Board Well

Cement Board Well Kit

  • 1 tube exterior grey caulking
  • 1 bag DURASKIRT™ cement powder (color matched)

Cement Board Well Installation

Begin the cement board well by placing a panel on each side of the desired underfloor opening using the Access Well Frame between them to determine the opening width (approx. 34 ½”). Next, lay down two DURASKIRT™ panels with their backs together, white mark to white mark. Now layout and mark with the pencil the desired height and width (may vary 24 1/8”) leaving ¾” short for well front and giving the top a 2” slope. Finally, cut the two sides of the well making sure to leave the fabric at the bottom edge.

Following the above procedure, carry the cement board pieces to the opening and place them on each side of the well-frame. Using the frame, you can set and level both pieces with white marks inward, fabric outward, and using the frame to hold them in place. Make sure to leave a gap between

the top of the well-frame and the bottom of the siding. Now measure the outside width (35 ½”) for the front well panel so it spans over the side panels for support.

Cement Board Sides & Lid

The next step for building the cement board well is to cut the lid placing the white markdown. The lid will be 37” x 25 ½” (Cut the fabric edge off). Also, it’s important to choose a panel that is free from chips. Moreover, install it under the front edge of the Access Well Frame where you left a gap. When finished the lid should fit firmly underneath the belly band or precast concrete siding.

Precast Concrete Siding for 2020 and Beyond

Almost 20 years ago we began producing a precast concrete siding, DURASKIRT™, for skirting mobile homes. Through the years the technology has been dramatically improved with its production capability. Not only is DURASKIRT™ a viable skirting product but is used as an exterior concrete board for commercial structures for protecting insulation.

What is precast concrete siding?

precast concrete siding

DURASKIRT™ precast concrete siding for exterior use and dirt fill.

Precast concrete siding is a concrete cladding for covering the external parts of any structure. Moreover, the chemistry of today’s concrete makes for a long-lasting desirable siding worth the initial expenditure. Although costly, the ROI over time makes concrete siding the least expensive siding on the market today.

What are the benefits using concrete siding?

The obvious benefits to using concrete siding are durability, longevity and cost over time versus other products. Understandably, concrete consists of one of the oldest materials known to man. Additionally, concretes’ durability has been proven through centuries of use. Imagine the cost of replacing siding twice in the life of a building rather than simply installing concrete siding once.

Is there labor savings over other products?

Initially there usually is no difference in labor costs associated with other siding products. The main difference is you only must install concrete siding once in a life of a building. Of course, this results in a tremendous labor savings and product savings.

Are their differences in the concrete mixture vs foundation concrete?

Yes. Concrete used in foundation mixtures usually consist of stock aggregate sizes, cement and water. Precast concrete siding utilizes specially designed aggregate sizes and the addition of several distinct chemicals to enhance the plasticity, freeze thawing and shrink resistance. Other chemicals can add resistance to growing moss or ivy.

Why are there so few choices available for concrete siding?

Today there is practically nowhere you can go without seeing concrete. Due to its practicality, concrete has begun its likely journey into our homes as counters and siding. Although for centuries, concrete has been in use in terrazzo floors and terrazzo tiles. Thus, DURASKIRT™ precast concrete siding was invented in 2000 proving itself for almost twenty years that it’s a viable product.

Modern Deck Skirting Ideas

2020 is just around the corner and the new modern is keeping things plain and simple. For instance, when it comes to modern deck skirting the plain smooth concrete wall is desired. Basically, millennial’s are more concerned about showing off their gadgets.

Likewise, millennial’s want quality low-maintenance products so they can go about their lives with less concerns. When it comes to home products it’s no difference. Products need to be subtle, plain and long-lasting especially when it comes to deck skirting.

So, What Does Modern Deck Skirting Look Like?

modern deck skirting

Here is an example of the smooth concrete look accomplished by DURASKIRT™.

As you know, modern structures are built using materials such as concrete, glass and metal. Likewise, if you desire to build a modern deck it will need skirting to keep varmints out. So, the best modern deck skirting is using a concrete product.

Furthermore, let’s explore the ways you can accomplish building a modern looking deck skirting. As you know, there are hundreds of ways to skin a cat. Nevertheless, there is always the best way for everything until you find something better.

How To Mold A Smooth Look Concrete

Given that concrete is a moldable material it forms to whatever surface you form. For instance, to get a smooth look, like we’re trying to accomplish here, you must mold it with a smooth material. Of course, smooth plastic, sleek steel, MDO plywood, or glass can be used to get a smooth concrete look. But not all of these are cost efficient.

Subsequently, if I am pouring concrete in place, I like using plastic coated MDO plywood to get the modern look. Conversely, I prefer a mobile home skirting product called DURASKIRT™ that is molded using steel forms. This product looks better than a pored-in-place wall and is engineered for ground burial so no worries.

Finally, now that the cat is out of the bag, namely DURASKIRT™ is great for all your modern deck skirting needs. Likewise, use this concrete board for both residential and commercial deck skirting. To order yours call MH SERIVICE & Supply at 360-419-9909.

— 4 Reasons Why Concrete Board Skirting Is the Right Choice

There is plenty of mobile home skirting options out there, but if you want to do what’s best for your home and your family, you’ve got to opt for concrete.

concrete board

Remember DURASKIRT™ when you are looking for a skirting product that is durable and real made of real high-strength concrete.

Here’s why:

1) It can go toe-to-toe with Mother Nature

Whether you live in a place where the temperature routinely goes over 100°, you live in a place that’s always rainy, or you live in a place where even polar bears would shiver during the winter months, concrete mobile home skirting can deal with it.  That’s a big difference from wood, which can rot after a summer’s worth of thunderstorms.

It’s also a big difference from metal skirting, which can rust in high humidity.  And, it’s a big difference from vinyl skirting, which can tear off in high winds or get brittle in cold temperatures.

If you don’t want to replace your skirting every few years, you’ve got to go with a material that’s able to withstand anything that Mother Nature throws at it.  Concrete board skirting is the only material that can handle everything!

2) It can lend your utility bills a helping hand

The crawl space underneath your mobile home can be murder on your utility bills.  After all, it gives the outside air a place to swirl around — and, thus, affect the temperature inside your home.  It also gives your climate-controlled indoor air a place to escape.

But when you’ve got concrete board mobile home skirting, these problems disappear.  That’s because the skirting is tough enough to keep even the coldest, most blustery of winds from sneaking under your home.  And, it will keep any heat that escapes from your home underneath it, where it can still help keep you warm and toasty.

You won’t just see a big difference in the winter, though.  Once summertime comes calling, your concrete mobile home skirting will prevent your home’s air conditioned air from escaping, and it will keep the hot outside air from making its way into your crawl space.

3) It keeps all of those pesky critters out

No matter where you live, there is a family of raccoons, rats, snakes, or insects that would love to move into your crawl space!  If you’d like to keep the underside of your home critter-free, you’ve got to opt for concrete mobile home skirting.  It’s so tough that even the most determined of critters won’t be able to eat their way through it.

4) It makes your home look permanent

manufactured home skirting

DURASKIRT™ exterior concrete board makes great skirting for manufactured homes.

Let’s face it — having a mobile home that’s simply propped up with blocks doesn’t offer much of a “homey” feel.  It makes your home look like it can be loaded onto a truck and driven away at a moment’s notice.

But once you install some concrete board skirting for mobile homes, that “temporary” look will disappear.  You’ll have a home that looks like it has a traditional concrete foundation — making it the perfect place to set down roots!

Concrete Board Siding – What Is The Best?

When you are looking to replace skirting for your mobile home you are no doubt looking for something that is sturdy. Also, it must be, reliable, versatile, and—of course—reasonably priced. There are many different types of boarding and skirting out there on the market, ranging from brick products to wood slats and concrete siding, and much more. The most important factors that indicate the quality of siding are the quality of the materials, the longevity of the product, and how the product can be used.

Concrete Boards

DURASKIRT™ best concrete board siding is Back-fill ready.

DURASKIRT™ is a versatile, highest quality cement or best concrete board siding that can be used on everything from mobile homes to log cabins to post and beam houses and much more. In terms of high quality, reliable concrete board siding, DURASKIRT™ meets every expectation you as a homeowner could have—and then exceeds them.

Do It Yourself Concrete Board Siding

One of the most unique aspects of DURASKIRT™ is how easy it can be to install. Did you know, much of the high prices involved in concrete siding installation are not actually from the materials. But from what people charge to actually install the product. Paying for time and labor can easily triple or even quadruple the total cost of getting new concrete skirting, especially if you are dealing with a company that charges an exorbitant amount for labor. DURASKIRT™, however, provides you with two very reasonable options: do-it-yourself installation or having it installed for you.

The pricing for installing DURASKIRT™ siding yourself is very reasonable: per linear foot for the traditional smooth concrete siding; or a deal per lineal foot for cement board siding. This calculates to be very cost-effective per square foot, respectively. DURASKIRT™ is much easier to install than other types of concrete siding. It’s making the “do it yourself” option very appealing to many people.

Have It Installed

If you don’t want to install DURASKIRT™ siding yourself, however, you are in luck. The company also offers an affordable installation price, which covers the cost of the siding. The installation price for the traditional concrete board siding is reasonable per linear foot.

DURASKIRT™ brings everything you could want in concrete siding to the table. Plus that little extra makes it truly unique in the business. If you are looking for the very best in concrete board siding, look no further than DURASKIRT™.

Mobile Homes Need Skirting.  Here Are Some Skirting Ideas

Skirting enhances the visual appeal of a mobile home. Furthermore, this article will explain the various skirting ideas to help you make a more informed decision. So, it’s helpful to understand first the need for skirting.

Skirting is a barrier against the elements. Moreover, it also prevents various creatures like rodents, insects, and snakes from nesting underneath your home. Likewise, these creatures can cause damage to your insulation, water lines, and electric wires.

So, the question is not whether to use skirting ideas, but which one to choose. Additionally, we’ve listed below a few mobile homes skirting ideas including their pros and cons. Hopefully, they will help you make the right choice:

– Aluminum skirting

This used to be the most popular mobile home skirting option because aluminum is strong, durable, and does not get easily damaged. Although, it is prone to corrosion as is all aluminum. However, unlike other aluminum, aluminum skirting panels are chemically treated to be resistant to the outdoor elements.

Additionally, with aluminum skirting you will not have to worry about rusting, rotting, or termite infestation. The main disadvantage of aluminum skirting is that it is prone to fading, especially the darker colors and treatment failure.

– Vinyl skirting ideas

The advantages are it is inexpensive, weatherproof, and easy to install. But it is not as durable as aluminum and other materials available. Besides, many mobile homeowners who installed vinyl skirting report that they have problems with rodents.

Also, these creatures are chewing their electric wires and making holes in the insulation. Vinyl may be tempting due to its low cost but not for the long term. Lastly, it tends to be one of the most expensive options available.

Read this article: How much does vinyl skirting cost over time?

– Wood, particleboard, and plywood skirting.

Rodent Intrusion Through Mobile Home Skirting

Treated plywood with a rodent hole.

Another option to enhance the beauty of your mobile home and cut the costs for heating is wood, particleboard, and plywood skirting. Still, the panels are chemically treated to be made outdoor proof and should not be vulnerable to water. Unfortunately, they do grow mold when exposed to moisture and do eventually rot.

Moreover, many people who live in regions with high moisture levels and frequent precipitation report having problems with moisture and mold. Also, wood, particleboard, and plywood will not stop rodents from chewing their way through.

So, vinyl skirting, plywood, or anything made of wood is a very short-term solution.

 – Simulated fake stone/fake brick skirting

For skirting ideas creating an illusion of real stone or brick you can use fake stone/brick.  Be mindful it consists of pressure-treated wood framing to attach the fake stone or brick-like panels.

Likewise, Simulated stone/brick skirting looks beautiful, but the wood can become a breeding ground for mold that can spread to the rest of your home.

So, vinyl skirting, plywood, or anything made of wood is a very short-term solution.

– Concrete skirting –

“Best for deterring rodents.” Being the most durable and convenient of all mobile home skirting options. Also, it will keep the rodents and similar creatures away, will not rust, rot, or get affected by mold or termites.

Likewise, concrete skirting is a little bit more expensive but considering that it lasts a lifetime, it can save you a great deal of money in the long term. Besides, you can paint or stain it in any color you like or leave it natural.

Moreover, people like the natural look because it creates the look of a site-built home.  The other benefits are added security, comfort, and lower energy bills.

Lastly, If you live in an area with a cold climate, concrete skirting for manufactured homes will help you keep your home much warmer as it will protect the underneath of the floor from the cold air and winds.

Note: Skirting and underpinning are the same.
